Tooling & mandrels
Before any of the lamp parts can be made a
hardwood Mandrel has to be turned from Maple.
This form is made to the exact internal shape of
the part to be spun.  As with everything else, this
wood block is turned freehand by the artist to
very close tolerances.  Standard  wood turning
tools are not used for this operation, old files are
ground to shape and sharpened.  A slip of the
tool at this stage can be costly and will result in
having to remake the mandrel.  Each shape to be
spun has its own mandrel or form which is then
produced this way.  Some lamp designs can have
as many as 20 mandrels.

As well as these, special jigs and tooling will be
made for various other operations needed to
complete the final piece.
